CHAIRMAN’S FOREWORD
Our Journey: Why We Came Together
Five years ago, the idea of uniting Kenya’s petroleum dealers was just that—an idea. We were a scattered group of businesspeople, each navigating challenges alone. Today, that vision has taken root and flourished.
POAK now represents 70% of retail outlets in Kenya, slightly above 6,000 stations. Our membership mix includes franchised and non-franchised outlets. For years, our industry was fragmented—independent dealers kept the wheels of energy supply turning, but their voices rarely influenced decisions that shaped their businesses. POAK changed that by creating a platform for dialogue, advocacy, and learning.
What We’ve Achieved Together
- Driving reforms to remove Withholding VAT on petroleum products.
- Advocating for margin reviews that reflect real operational costs (up 70%).
- Promoting transparent pricing frameworks based on market principles.
- Formalizing informal operators for dignity and policy recognition.
- Launching advisory services for new entrants navigating regulations.
- Hosting Kenya’s first SME Petroleum Conference to foster innovation and policy influence.
- Continual lobbying of Parliament and Treasury on key tax and system issues.
Where We Stand Now
POAK is no longer knocking on doors—we are at the table, shaping Kenya’s energy future. Our voice is recognized in EPRA consultations, Ministry of Energy dialogues, and national supply forums. We are not just observers; we are solution builders.
Looking Ahead
- Strengthening member capacity through training, digital platforms, and access to finance.
- Championing evidence-based policy advocacy through data and research.
- Preparing for a just energy transition towards a cleaner, low-carbon future.
A Call to Our Members and Partners
This journey belongs to all of us. Let’s continue working for a sector that is ethical, inclusive, and future-ready—one that values dealer dignity, consumer trust, and national growth. The future is not only bright—it is intentional.
